Final Evaluation

For my experimental video piece i finally produced a video call the illusions of light, which is a bout finding happiness through darkness, it basically consists of a clip of me drawing something in the air with light and then a preview of what i have just drawn. The inspiration for my video i got from the talk talk advert. My final piece is completely different to what i firstly planned because my first idea went straight out of the window after i didn't catch anything, then i came up with this idea and it all wen't to plan apart from me running out of batteries and having to buy new ones.
The audience that i showed it to seemed to be quite happy with my video so yeah i am pleased with the reactions.
If i was going to do this project again then i would probably try and make better images and use a better light.
The other piece of work that i have seen that are like mine having a lot of craft is "muto" by blu.
I could say that my piece is art because "muto" and "gisele kounen" are classed as art and mine is quite similar because of the craft used.

Production Diary

Saturday 31st October - Today i went to record my video but as i didn't catch i had to change my idea, i am now doing the illusions of light by trying to write something in the air with light.

it went well today as i managed to get it all filmed and all the photos taken the images came out well and the videoing went well as well,

On the first day of editing i worked on the macs and edited my clips and photo's all together to make one and added transitions to it all for all the unwanted clips i just deleted them, i found a soundtrack to go with my video from the garage band pre loaded sounds.

Then i made a dvd by importing it into i dvd and choosing a menu that i liked,

Chameleon

Whilst I was in Brighton I went to the Farica gallery with Chameleon by Tina Gonsalves which was a weird piece of art as it was peoples faces on screens around the room copying your mood as you look in the cameras.
The concept behind this was that it interacts with the audience and the craft was that it is a video projected onto a little screen with a camera by the side of it which took 12 points of your face to decide what mood you were in and then the image on the screen would copy it.

Girl Chewing Gum - John Smith

Recently I have viewed the video "Girl Chewing Gum" by John Smith which has the concept of giving random people walking past in the street a position in the video as if they are real characters. The director tries to deceive the audience into thinking that he is there at the scene.
The craft is that the narrator seems like he is there at the scene but actually it is later revealed that he is in a field a couple of miles away so he has filmed a scene then reviewed it and has written a script for that particular scene.

Muto by Blu

I recently viewed Muto by blu which is a stop frame animation made on the streets by simply spray painting an image on the walls there was a lot of craft involved with this video because of it all being painted and then picture taken. The concept behind this video could be seen as birth, death and re birth.

Chapter 3

After viewing Material gestures by Paul McCarthy at Tate modern I realised that it didn't have a structure to it and there was no beginning, middle and end. This video is non narrative because i could view the video at any point. I also viewed koyaanisqatsi which has a narrative because there was some thing that happened in the beginning, middle and end. If i didn't watch the whole film then it wouldn't have made any sense. I don't think that it is essential to have a structure because they both have a meaning but it doesn't change wether there is a narrative or not because I don't usually notice if there is one.

Chapter Two

The use of technology can affect the product when it was made because if it was made in 1950's then there was good equipment and technology but it was only good for then now there is much better equipment out so they wouldnt have been able to do stop frame animation on computers or use some modern techniques. The equipment was good for the time, but if you used it now then it wouldn't be good compared to the stuff we use today. When something was made they might have been using the latest technology but the wouldn't choose to use that stuff now because there is much better equipment now and there is more techniques now.

Chapter Six

The different reactions from audiences is good to look at because every ones reaction is very different sometimes they think it is a good piece and really positive about it but then the next person might be really negative about it and not like it. I personally didn't get the meaning of this "art" but I dont think it mattered because I don't think any one got the meaning.
If the artist did have a meaning then he didn't make it very obvious.

After viewing Paul Mc Carthy's "art" at tate the people coming out had very different opinions about the work some people looked disgusted and disturbed by seeing these vodeos, but then other people like it and think that it is good art.

Chapter One.

I have recently viewed three different artists work Koyaanisqatsi by Godfrey Reggio, Girl chewing gum by John Smith and Andy Huang's Doll Face.

Koyaanisqatsi and Girl chewing gum can be linked by the non diagetic sound with the narrative.
Doll face uses the concept of perception of the celebrity world when a doll lookes up to the celebrity on the tele looking all perfect who she wants to be like, but koyaanisqatsi uses the perception of the real world with the contrast between new and old and fast and slow.

There isn't a lot of technology used it girl chewing gum because its just a camera shot with a voice over which was good technology at the time, but in doll face there is a lot of stop frame animation which would have taken a lot longer to make.
Although girl chewing gum and koyaanisqatsi are both old they are both very different with koyaanisqatsi using good colour but girl chewing gum using black and white but the use of colour simply comes down to godfrey reggio having more money and being able to use money.

Gisele Kerozene - Jan Kounen

After watching this weird video by Jan Kounen i was surprised at how strange it is because it's not every day that you watch a video with two withces chasing each other on broom sticks around Paris. There is a lot of craft behind this video because it is a lot of stop frame animation and would have taken ages to make it. I can't think about concept behind it so i don't think there is one.

Chapter Five - Experimental video ideas

My video idea is to film me fishing with the calm and tranquil scene but then as soon as i catch to see and hear the busy scene of the rods screeching off, and keep repeating it.
The concept behind this idea is the contrast between quiet and loud/busy like the calmness of the lake with the birds flying around and the odd fish jumping out of the lake then when i catch a fish the bite alarms go off and the reels are letting out a load of line.

My idea was inspired by the film koyaanisqatsi because i quite like the way there is no acting.

Koyaanisqatsi review

Visual Images
To start there is tribal paintings on cave walls with non diagetic chanting of koyaanisqatsi. Throughout the film there is big explosions of buildings.
There is very slow motion camera shots and very fast shots aswell.

When it shows the grand canyon and then the big cities, it is trying to show the difference between two things.

Audio
The music is all non diagetic, either soundtracks with good beats or a man chanting "koyaanisqatsi". The music ties in with the images like when it's slow motion then you have got slow music.

Concept
The concept is a big balance of opposites and contrast e.g. Violent but with calm music, New and old people and buildings, fast and slow camera shots.

My Thoughts
My thoughts of the film is that it's very boring and i would not buy it because there was no acting and just images with a little bit of background music it's not exciting in any way.

Chapter 4 - The use of space creates meaning.

Where a piece of art is shown can change the meaning of that particular piece, the actual art hasn't changed but the importance has. For example a piece by Vincent Van Gogh is placed in an art gallery you feel differently about it if it was placed in the street because it has lost its importance and could be seen as irrelevent.

When i was at the tate modern art gallery there was a piece of "art" by Paul Mc Carthy called Material Gestures in a dark room with a sign out side saying that there is sexual images inside which made us aware and curious of what is inside. Every one watching the sick videos was quiet but their reactions once leaving the room looked disgusted and surprised. The room it's self was only lit by the projectors used to show the videos, they were shown on three of the four walls with only a little space for people to see the "art".

Doll Face - Andy Huang

The concept of Doll Face is that the audience watching the t.v. are trying to copy the person on tele by wearing the same make up as them, this could be like the doll is getting more confidence the more make up she puts on and comes further out of the box. The craft of this video is that it's a computer animated short film. When the t.v. moves too far away she crashes and dies because her dreams were shattered.
