Chapter 4 - The use of space creates meaning.

Where a piece of art is shown can change the meaning of that particular piece, the actual art hasn't changed but the importance has. For example a piece by Vincent Van Gogh is placed in an art gallery you feel differently about it if it was placed in the street because it has lost its importance and could be seen as irrelevent.

When i was at the tate modern art gallery there was a piece of "art" by Paul Mc Carthy called Material Gestures in a dark room with a sign out side saying that there is sexual images inside which made us aware and curious of what is inside. Every one watching the sick videos was quiet but their reactions once leaving the room looked disgusted and surprised. The room it's self was only lit by the projectors used to show the videos, they were shown on three of the four walls with only a little space for people to see the "art".

  1. Good Liam, Can you discuss more about how the lighting and the space made you feel about the work?
